MENLO PARK

The homeowners were ready for a complete garden renovation. The pool was no longer used much, the long and narrow back yard was dominated by a high and wide laurel hedge, and the koi pond in the entrance courtyard had long been empty of fish.

The pool was removed and replaced with a small stone patio, vegetable beds, and espaliered fruit trees. The laurel hedge in the back yard was pruned of its lower branches to become a row of multi-trunk small trees, allowing room for a new firepit and a covered grilling and dining area. In the entrance courtyard the paving and front porch were redesigned, and the pond was removed and planted with a small Japanese maple and other shade-loving plants.
